Showcase: Data Migration from SCEPTRE to AMOS at ElAl

The SCEPTRE system is a piece of ancient database technology still used today by airlines to manage their aircraft airworthiness and maintenance data. Mainly still present with airlines in the United States, it posts a huge cost in order to maintain its infrastructure (IBM mainframe from the late ‘80s) and build add-on application to enable modern day digitalization initiatives such as mobile devices, e-signature or predictive maintenance. In today’s crisis and recovery of airlines lower the costs of digital infrastructure and at the same time continue with digitalization is of paramount importance for long term stability of airlines. However, if your backbone is built on SCEPTRE how to get the critical set of aircraft airworthiness & maintenance data out of this system in a controlled way without grounding your fleet? Read about how EXSYN tackled this challenge in our case-study (see below). It might also help you in some of your upcoming aircraft return deliveries!

About El Al

EL AL is the flag carrier of Israel and is a prestigious international carrier with a fleet of 45 aircraft and with 42 destinations in Eu-rope, Asia, Africa and North America .

Challenges

EL was using the legacy MRO soft-ware system (SCEPTRE) and many satellite applications to support MRO business processes. Imple-mentation of a new fully integrated MRO software system (AMOS). SCEPTRE system uses hierarchical data structures and COBALT copy-books to capture data. Limited air-line knowledge on SCEPTRE data structure and AMOS functionality. Requirement to migrate full fleet data in a secure and high-quality manner due to CAA surveillance.

Solution

Migration of the ELAL full fleet away from SCEPTRE into AMOS without risking accuracy and integrity of overall air-craft airworthiness data within the given project timelines. Additionally advise fleet management in best practice to setup their data in the new system.

EXSYN performed the following:

  • Workshop with business users to perform full data mapping between current system landscape and to-be MRO software and business processes

  • Activation of the TITAN ETL infrastructure, including required plugins for SCEPTRE and COBALT copybooks

  • Baseline data load to gauge state-of-play of all data

  • Iterative process for scripting of required Extraction-Transformation-Loading scripts

  • Automated verification in TITAN to ensure data integrity and quality

  • Creation of required output formats/routines based on new MRO software system

  • Minimal 3 full data loads, including end-user verification according defined verifica-tion templates from EXSYN

  • Final User Acceptance and Sign-off

  • Cut-over

  • Loading of historic data post go-live which is not deemed required for cut-over

  • Post go live support

Benefits

Higher Performance and Productivity

EXSYN’s data migration tool TITAN can handle large data volume from multiple sources and guarantee a repetitive process providing enhanced performance with almost 60 percent reduction in Average Handling Time.

Higher Data Quality

Migration of the full ELAL fleet adhering to strict data quality standards and enrichment of data by using EXSYN’s air-craft data warehouse.

Time and Cost Savings

Based on proven framework and years of experience timely and controlled data migration process and eventually go-live of the new MRO software system (AMOS).

“The service and commitment EXSYN has provided throughout our data migration project has enabled the successful go-live of our new MRO software system AMOS.” (El Al AMOS Imple-mentation Project Team)
