How long does an aircraft data migration take?
A question we quite often receive is 'How long does a data migration project take?’ The answer is not straightforward thus we have summarized the most importnat parameters that influence the timeline:
The System(s)
The complexity of the source system and system to be implemented
Is all data available in the old system? Or is some of the data that is needed in the new system still paper based or in excel?
Data & Processes
The data migration scope: Which business processes and data must be implemented and migrated?
The more business processes will be implemented, the more data needs to be migrated from the old to the new system
Resources
The number of available resources, knowledge and know-how for data migration, data cleansing and data verification
This is often a challenging part as people that are involved and needed for data migration projects have also a relevant role in the daily business of the airline
Hence are not right away available when critical decisions need to be made or data verified.
The fleet composition
Number of aircraft types, aircraft, and age of the aircraft
Older aircraft types and number of aircraft in general significantly impact the amount of work to be done on items such as maintenance programs, modifications, ADs & SBs as well as the historical data to be transferred.
Multiple aircraft types within the fleet multiplies the amount of work to be done
The IT Infrastructure
The setup of the IT infrastructure landscape significantly impacts the data migration processes
Think of a dedicated test environment(s), fast VPN connections or Remote Desktop sessions, cloud software for file sharing and version control, using an ETL, direct database connections with the ETL tool and the source & target databases
